T-Mobile iPhone boosts iOS market share by 3.5% in the States

Despite the pattern of market share growth moving in the favor of Android over the past few years in countries outside of the States, Apple?s appeal and grip on the smartphone consumers in its own country appears to be strengthening. The latest research from KantarWorldPanel shows a 3.5% increase in share for the iPhone over the three month period ending in May 2013 compared to last year.

For the most part, the shift can be attributed to T-Mobile, who only recently began offering Apple?s iPhone. Having only been released in April, the iPhone quickly became the best selling device available on Tmo over the three month period mentioned previously. Meaning it took little over a month to climb to the top of the smartphone pile at the magenta flavored carrier.

What?s interesting is the number of iPhone buyers who switched from feature phones to a smartphone for the first time. As noted by Dominic Sunnebo, Kantar WorldPanel?s consumer insight director:

iOS? strength on T-Mobile appears to be the ability to attract first time smartphone buyers, upgrading from a featurephone. Of T-Mobile consumers who bought an iOS device since it launched on the carrier, 53% had previously owned a featurephone, well above the market average of 45% of iOS owners who previously owned a featurephone.

Despite the growth, iOS is still a good 10% behind Android in the U.S. market. Android?s share is comfortable at 52% while the iPhone is behind on 41.9%. Still, it shows steady growth for our favorite manufacturer.

I think what?s particularly interesting is looking ahead to the iPhone 5S. Its arrival will undoubtedly be a popular one, especially if sales figures and growth follows the pattern of recent years. It stands to reason that if it is much more popular than the iPhone 5, it will push Apple ever closer to that 50% number.

With Apple and Google sharing 94% of the market, there?s little room for any other platform to make any impact, and shows more than ever that we are in an iOS/Android duopoly.
