Golden algae, Texas Tide or Prymnesium parvum, as it is known by its scientific name, produces toxins that can severely impact aquatic organisms. Over the past decade, golden algae blooms have been responsible for the death of tens of millions of fish in Texas reservoirs.
The study was published in the December issue of Harmful Algae.
Bryan W. Brooks, Ph.D., professor of environmental science and biomedical studies at Baylor and director of the environmental science graduate program and the environmental health science program, and his research team found that neutral pH levels prevented the algae's bloom development and the toxicity of the algae was greatly diminished.
"Our novel findings identify that surface water pH is a very important factor influencing whether harmful algal blooms of Prymnesium parvum will even occur in a lake or reservoir," Brooks said. "In addition to better understanding the ecology and toxicology of this invasive species, this new information promises to support more sustainable environmental management of fisheries and drinking water supplies."
Brooks and his research team conducted two experiments -- one during pre-bloom period and another during bloom development -- over 21 days to gauge the effect of pH 7 and 7.5 on toxicity of golden algae. The study -- in Lake Granbury, Texas, a common site of destructive golden algae blooms -- also included untreated lake water with pH of 8.5.
"In the bloom development experiment, acute toxicity to fish was observed in the untreated lake water (pH 8.5) and in the pH 7.5 treatment level as early as Day 7. However, the pH 7 treatment levels remained free from acute toxicity throughout the 21-day study," said Krista N. Prosser, Baylor environmental science graduate student and lead author of the study.
Researchers can now better identify when and where harmful blooms may occur and develop solutions to minimize the impact of golden algae.
"Because golden algae blooms appears to originate in coves that experience lower inflows than the main reservoir stems, coves may represent more reasonable management units to create refuge habitats and potentially preempt bloom formation," Brooks said.
Golden algae can be found in the following states: Ala., Ariz., Ark., Calif., Fla., Hawaii, La., Maine, Miss., N.C., N.M., Okla., Pa., S.C., Texas, Wash., W.Va. and Wyo.

Last month, Mark Wahlberg officially landed a role in Transformers 4. "I'm really excited about 'Transformers,'" Wahlberg says. "Michael Bay and I just did 'Pain & Gain' and we had such a good time making it. He came to me and said, 'I'm kind of doing a whole different reboot on 'Transformers.' Are you interested?' I said, 'Yeah, I'll do it!'. I loved the idea and I think we can make something really cool and kick-ass. This is not something where it's already established and I'm just in there to get a paycheck. I'm thinking this is the most important role of my career and I can do something really special."
The current plan is for Transformers 4 to shoot in May and see a release on June 27, 2014. Adding to Wahlberg's excitement is the anticipation from a very specific demographic.
"It's the only time my kids have ever been interested in a movie I'm making," he laughs.

NEWTOWN, Conn. -- ?A few tears marked Pete Kearney's face as he walked away from a vigil late Saturday near the fire station next to Sandy Hook Elementary School.
Kearney, 47 and the father of two teenagers and a 22-year-old, said he had read out loud the names of every victim of the school massacre to his 17-year-old son earlier Saturday to take in the loss to the community.
?It just felt never-ending ? overpowering, overwhelming,? said Kearney, a golf course greenkeeper whose children live with him in Newtown. ?It felt real before that, but then, you know, you see the ages and the names ? it's just incredible, so sad. I don't think I have the words.?
Kearney said that the release of the names might be?a first step in the grieving process, and perhaps "we can start reaching out to some of the victims' families, helping them heal and in that step, help ourselves heal, and move forward, all of us. I guess it's all virgin territory, all of us. No answers here."
Kearney hoped to return later that evening with his daughter to the ongoing vigil, where people were placing flowers, stuffed animals and lighting candles. He choked up at times talking with a reporter about the tragedy that struck their community, noting that one of his children's friends had lost their mother.
?Nobody knows what to do, I think. You light a candle, say a prayer,? he said, his voice trembling as the words trailed off.
At makeshift memorials at the fire station and elsewhere across town, people gathered to mourn, cry, pray and sing.
Friends Kelley Sullivan and Erin Nemeth, both 21, brought 20 Beanie Babies to the fire station in Sandy Hook, where on Friday parents of victims waited to learn their children's fate. Even before the names were released, Nemeth said she knew that a boy and a girl on her block had been killed.
?To me it makes it seem even more surreal? with the release of the names, Nemeth said. ?It just doesn't seem like it's real,? she said, shuddering.

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - President Barack Obama plans to travel to Newtown, Connecticut, on Sunday to meet with families of the victims of a Friday school shooting that was one of the deadliest such incidents in the nation's history.
The White House said in a statement Obama will speak at a 7 p.m. EST Sunday interfaith vigil for families of the victims and other students from Sandy Hook Elementary School, which was attacked on Friday by a heavily armed gunman.
In his weekly radio and internet address earlier on Saturday, Obama said it was time to "take meaningful action to prevent more tragedies like this."
But he stopped short of specifically calling for tighter gun-control laws.

CAIRO/ALEXANDRIA (Reuters) - Egyptians queued to vote on Saturday on a constitution promoted by its Islamist backers as the way out of a prolonged political crisis and rejected by opponents as a recipe for further divisions in the Arab world's biggest nation.
Soldiers joined police to secure the referendum after deadly protests during the buildup. Street brawls erupted again on Friday in Alexandria, Egypt's second city, but voting proceeded quietly there, with no reports of violence elsewhere.
President Mohamed Mursi provoked angry demonstrations when he issued a decree last month expanding his powers and then fast-tracked the draft constitution through an assembly dominated by his Muslim Brotherhood group and its allies. At least eight people were killed in clashes last week outside the presidential palace.
The liberal, secular and Christian opposition says the constitution is too Islamist and tramples on minority rights. Mursi's supporters say the charter is needed if progress is to be made towards democracy nearly two years after the fall of military-backed strongman Hosni Mubarak.
"The sheikhs (preachers) told us to say 'yes' and I have read the constitution and I liked it," said Adel Imam, a 53-year-old queuing to vote in a Cairo suburb. "The president's authorities are less than before. He can't be a dictator."
Opposition politician and Nobel Peace Prize laureate Mohamed ElBaradei wrote on Twitter: "Adoption of (a) divisive draft constitution that violates universal values and freedoms is a sure way to institutionalize instability and turmoil."
Official results will not be announced until after a second round of voting next Saturday. But partial results and unofficial tallies are likely to emerge soon after the first round, giving an idea of the overall trend.
In order to pass, the constitution must be approved by more than 50 percent of voters who cast ballots. A little more than half of Egypt's electorate of 51 million are eligible to vote in the first round in Cairo and other cities.
TRANSITION
Christians, making up about 10 percent of Egypt's 83 million people and who have long grumbled of discrimination, were among those waiting at a polling station in Alexandria to oppose the basic law. They fear Islamists, long repressed by Mubarak, will restrict social and other freedoms.
"I voted 'no' to the constitution out of patriotic duty," Michael Nour, a 45-year-old Christian teacher in Alexandria. "The constitution does not represent all Egyptians," he said.
Islamists are counting on their disciplined ranks of supporters and the many Egyptians who may fall into line in a desperate bid to end turmoil that has hammered the economy and sent Egypt's pound to eight-year lows against the dollar.
"I voted 'yes' for stability," said shopkeeper Ahmed Abou Rabu, 39. "I cannot say all the articles of the constitution are perfect but I am voting for a way forward. I don't want Egyptians to go in circles, for ever lost in this transition."
Mursi was among the early voters after polls opened at 8 a.m. (1:00 a.m. Eastern Time). He was shown on television casting his ballot shielded by a screen and then dipping his finger in ink - a measure to prevent people voting twice.
One senior official in the committee overseeing the referendum said Saturday's vote could extend to Sunday if crowds were too heavy to allow everyone cast ballots in one day. Voting for Egyptians abroad that began on Wednesday has been extended to Monday, the state news agency reported.
After weeks of turbulence, there has been limited public campaigning. Opposition politicians and parties, beaten in two elections since Mubarak's overthrow, only announced on Wednesday they backed a "no" vote instead of a boycott.
Flag-waving Islamists gathered peacefully at one of the main mosques on Friday, some shouting "Islam, Islam" and "We've come here to say 'yes' to the constitution".
PALACE SIT-IN
Opposition supporters assembled outside the presidential palace, where there has been a sit-in for days. The walls of the palace, ringed by tanks, are scrawled with anti-Mursi graffiti.
The referendum will be held on two days covering different regions, with the second round on December 22, because there are not enough judges willing to monitor all polling stations after some in the judiciary said they would boycott the vote.
Egyptians are being asked to accept or reject a constitution that must be in place before a parliamentary election can be held next year to replace an Islamist-led parliament dissolved this year. Many hope this will lead Egypt towards stability.
If the constitution is voted down, a new assembly will have to be formed to draft a revised version, a process that could take up to nine months.
The army has deployed about 120,000 troops and 6,000 tanks and armored vehicles to protect polling stations and other government buildings. While the military backed Mubarak and his predecessors, it has not intervened in the present crisis.

A state economic development grant that helped Glastonbury transportation compliance company relocate to the Colt complex in Hartford will be announced later today by the governor.

A source familiar with the announcement told me this morning that the grant will pay for a portion of the $2 million needed to prepare 17,000 square feet in the South Armory and parking for Foley Carrier Services.
The company relocated from Glastonbury to Colt last week, bringing about 110 employees to the city and has plans for more hiring, the source said.
The size of the grant from the state Department of Economic and Community Development couldn?t immediately be determined, but the source estimated that it may be as much as 25 percent.
A spokesman for Gov. Dannel P. Malloy declined to comment.
Foley was acquired by Andover, Mass.-based BirdDog Co, in 2010 and advises shippers and other product carriers on how to meet federal transportation guidelines on safety and other regulations. Foley also provides drug and alcohol testing
At the time of the acquisition, Foley had about 17,000 customers nationwide.

JERUSALEM (Reuters) - Israeli Foreign Minister Avigdor Lieberman said on Thursday he need not resign after the Justice Ministry decided to indict him for fraud and breach of trust, less severe charges than were originally considered.
However, should he be forced from office by the scandal, it would shake up Israel's top echelon weeks before a general election that the right-wing party of Lieberman and Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is predicted to win.
"According to the legal opinion given to me, I do not have to resign," an upbeat Lieberman said during a speech, rousing supporters to applaud.
"A final decision will be made after consultation with my lawyers and in the consideration of not hurting the voting public."
He denied all wrongdoing and called for speedy legal proceedings.
Lieberman's lawyers, citing legal precedents, had said in a statement they did not believe the courts would force him to resign. Opposition parties called for him to step down.
Investigations into Lieberman, 54, were first opened in 2001 and spanned nine countries. The more serious allegations included money-laundering and bribery, but the Attorney-General said there was no chance of a conviction on those.
The indictment focuses on Lieberman's efforts to promote an Israeli diplomat who had leaked him privileged information about a police probe pertaining to Lieberman.
Netanyahu welcomed the decision not to press more serious charges and said in a statement he hoped Lieberman would "also prove his innocence in the single remaining issue".
'SERIOUS CONFLICT OF INTEREST'
A draft of the indictment passed on to parliament said Lieberman had acted in "a serious conflict of interest between his duties to the public as foreign minister ... and his personal feeling of commitment to (the diplomat) who had acted on his behalf in passing him secret information".
Shuki Lamberger, a senior state prosecutor, said it could take up to a month for the indictment to be officially served because of parliamentary immunity, which Lieberman said he would waive.
Former Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert resigned in 2008 after being indicted for corruption, though he has since been acquitted of most charges.
An outspoken foreign minister and a powerful partner in Netanyahu's governing coalition, Lieberman is known for his nationalistic rhetoric, making it a key component of his election campaigning.
This week Lieberman angered the European Union by saying it did not sufficiently condemn calls from the Islamist group Hamas for Israel's destruction and likened this to Europe's failure to stop the Nazi genocide against Jews during World War Two.
The European Union foreign policy chief called the comments offensive and reiterated the bloc's commitment to Israel's security.
Born in Moldova, Lieberman immigrated to Israel in 1978. He became administrative head of the Likud party in 1993 and ran the prime minister's office from 1996 to 1997 during Netanyahu's first term.
Frustrated with coalition politics, he left and formed his own party, Yisrael Beiteinu (Our Home is Israel), in 1999.
Lieberman has questioned the loyalties of Israel's 1.5 million Arab citizens, drawing accusations of racism but also a large electoral following beyond his Russian-speaking base.
He and Netanyahu recently merged their parties and opinion polls have shown them coasting to victory on January 22.

The game looks like it came straight out of the 16-bit era, offering some of the best graphics ever seen from that age. The action is side-scrolling and sprite-based, and while the resolution is low enough that pixels can be clearly seen, the animation is as fluid as the best Disney games that appeared on either previous system. The backgrounds are lush and show depth thanks to the 3DS' screen, but like so many side scrolling games on the handheld the 3D effect consists almost entirely of the background appearing further back and the foreground appearing closer, with no real interactivity between the two planes.
Action feels like the original Castle of Illusion with a splash of Epic Mickey's paintbrush mechanic thrown in. His magic paintbrush lets him paint "sketches" by drawing outlines on the touch screen or erase them by scribbling over them, which can create useful objects or remove obstacles like platforms and enemies. It's an interesting idea at first, but it quickly wears out its welcome by the time you draw the tenth sketch in a row. It throws off the platforming rhythm of the game, which could have felt smooth and entertaining if you didn't have to draw or erase things every minute to move on. The sketch mechanic gets some credit from me because of one sketch of Scrooge McDuck in the game. You can summon him in battle where he uses his cane as a pogo stick to jump on enemies, a nice nod to Capcom's Ducktales game.
Small Game
A handful of wings in the castle offer limited environments to explore, and the illusory worlds of Aladdin, The Little Mermaid, and Peter Pan quickly wear out their welcome. Unfortunately, there aren't many locations besides those three worlds, each with less than ten levels. You can come back to the levels as much as you want, and side quests in the Fortress will have you do just that. The side quests almost always involve playing through the level again and finding a specific character or item, and there's nothing new or fresh in each additional playthrough. Other side quests are even more tedious, forcing you to run between different characters in the Fortress to talk to them and then return. The side quests have few useful rewards, and feel like they're just trying to pad a game that doesn't have much to offer.
Epic Mickey: The Power of Illusion had a lot of potential to be a callback to the classic Genesis game, but a lack of variety and stilted gameplay keeps it from being a nostalgic must-have. The constant sketching and erasing and the repetitive side quests make the game feel like it's a downloadable game desperately looking to justify its physical release. If the game was a $10 release on the 3DS eStore and stripped out the side quests and touch screen, it could have been a memorable, inexpensive romp any retro player would want. As a $40 retail game, though, it just doesn't hold much magic.

Brave New Productions is proud to celebrate its 10th anniversary with ?ART?, a Tony-Award winning comedy by Yazmina Reza (English translation by Christopher Hampton). ?ART? comes on the heels of Brave New Productions? much praised ?The Laramie Project: 10 Years Later?, and is an official event of the MONTR?AL EN LUMI?RE festival.
When Serge (Donald Rees) buys an outrageously expensive painting, it?s an act that may spark the downfall of his life-long friendships with Yvan (Sean Curley) and Marc (Nir Guzinski ). You see, the painting is entirely white and everyone has an opinion. What is art? Who gets to decide? A hilarious and thoughtful comedy directed by Emma McQueen. ?ART? is produced by David Reudelhuber with lighting design by Isabelle Tremblay.
In celebration of ?ART? and Brave New Productions? 10th anniversary, Th??tre Ste-Catherine will be transformed into ?The ?ART? Gallery?, with works on display from members of the cast, alumni, and selected pieces created by artists from across Canada. The gallery will be open before and after all performances of ?ART?, and many pieces will be available for purchase as part of a silent auction.
French playwright Yasmina Reza garnered international acclaim with her play ?ART? (1994), for which she received the 1998 Lawrence Olivier Award for best comedy and the 1998 Antoinette Perry (Tony) Award for best play, as well as Moli?re awards for best author, best play, and best production. ?ART? concerns the cataclysmic effect on three friends, Serge, Marc, and Yvan, when Serge purchases an expensive work of abstract art ? a large painting consisting of white lines on a white canvas. As the three men engage in an ongoing debate over the value of the painting, emotions run high and the conflict escalates to the point of nearly destroying a long-standing friendship.
?ART? addresses themes exploring various aspects of the nature of friendship. Most critics agree that ?ART? is less about debates over artistic values than it is about the complexities of friendship. As Robert Hurwitt observed in a review for the San Francisco Chronicle, ??ART? isn?t about aesthetics but the psychological, emotional and power dynamics of friendship.?
