Microsoft Surface sales well below shipments says iSuppli

    CNet Thursday 31st January, 2013

(Credit: CNET) Sales of Microsoft's first Surface tablet fell well short of the 1 million mark, while return rates were high, IHS iSuppli told CNET. Shipments of the Surface RT device, which debuted last quarter, into the channel were about 1.25 million, but sales out of the channel "were significantly lower, maybe on the order of 55 to 60 percent of that figure," said Rhoda Alexander, an analyst at iSuppli, citing the market research firm'...

Report: Passenger plane crashes in Kazakhstan

ALMATY, Kazakhstan (AP) ? News agencies in Kazakhstan say a passenger plane carrying more than 20 people has crashed outside of Almaty, the country's principal city.

Interfax cites the deputy governor of Almaty province, Amandyk Batalov, as saying the aircraft was flying Tuesday from the northern town of Kokshetau.

There are no immediate indications of casualties. Interfax said there were 15 passengers and six crew members on the plane.

This is the second major aircraft accident in Kazakhstan in the past month. In December, 27 people killed were killed when an An-72 military plane crashed near the southern city of Shymkent.

Chrysler sees higher 2013 profit as comeback continues

(Reuters) - Chrysler Group LLC, the U.S. automaker majority owned by Italy's Fiat , said its 2013 profit would come in toward the low end of its initial business plan, and it cut its 2014 free cash flow forecast by two-thirds.

The No. 3 U.S. automaker, which also reported higher fourth-quarter earnings on Wednesday, now expects free cash flow of $1 billion in 2014. In 2009, Chief Executive Officer Sergio Marchionne had forecast $3 billion as part of his five-year business plan designed to help Chrysler regain its footing after its government-funded bankruptcy nearly four years ago.

Chrysler added that it expected free cash flow to shrink this year to about $1 billion or higher from $2.2 billion in 2013 as the automaker anticipates higher capital spending and slower growth.

But Marchionne, who had led both Fiat and Chrysler since 2009, was quick to add during a conference call with reporters and analysts that he expected the company's cash flow this year to be "well above" the $1 billion mark.

Chrysler's modified operating profit forecast of $3.8 billion in 2013 is nearly one-third higher than 2012 levels. Initially, Marchionne forecast a 2013 profit of between $3.8 billion and $4.4 billion.

Chrysler expects profit margins to rise to 5 percent from 4.4 percent last year. Revenue is expected to increase at least 9 percent to between $72 billion and $75 billion.

Since 2009, Chrysler has overhauled its lineup and emerged as the chief source of strength for Fiat as economic weakness in Europe hurts its sales. But Chrysler has also made its own missteps, as with the shaky introduction of its Dodge Dart compact car last year.

Fiat now owns 58.5 percent of Chrysler. The rest of Chrysler is owned by a retiree healthcare trust affiliated with the United Auto Workers union.

"While we are pleased to have achieved strong financial results in 2012, the enterprise we are crafting is not complete," Marchionne said in a statement.

Chrysler added that it planned to have 16 Fiat and Alfa Romeo models in its North American lineup by 2016.

For the fourth quarter, Chrysler reported a 68 percent rise in net income to $378 million from $225 million a year earlier, driven by higher vehicle sales in North America.

The Auburn Hills, Michigan-based company said its net income would rise to about $2.2 billion in 2013 from $1.67 billion in 2012.

Heat Shock Proteins May Shed New Light on a Variety of Debilitating Diseases

Jan. 28, 2013 ? UCLA researchers, in a finding that runs counter to conventional wisdom, have discovered for the first time that a gene thought to express a protein in all cells that come under stress is instead expressed only in specific cell types.

The group, from the Jules Stein Eye Institute and UCLA Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine, focused on ?B-Crystallin, a small heat shock protein. Heat shock proteins are a class of functionally-related proteins involved in the folding and unfolding of other proteins. Their expression is increased when cells are exposed to taxing environmental conditions, such as infection, inflammation, exercise, exposure to toxins and other stressors.

?B-Crystallin may be associated with certain cancers and could be developed into a biomarker to monitor for diseases such as multiple sclerosis, age-related macular degeneration, heart muscle degeneration and clouding of the eye lens. Any discoveries about how this protein is regulated and its molecular biology may reveal potential targets for novel therapies, said study first author Zhe Jing, a research associate in UCLA Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine.

"If you use a certain cell type, this protein can be induced when the cells are stressed, but that doesn't happen in a different cell type," said Jing. "This novel finding does conflict with what has been thought, that this protein could be induced in any cell type."

The findings of this two-year study are published in the most recent issue of the journal Cell Stress and Chaperones, a peer-reviewed journal in the fields of cell stress response.

The UCLA team did the study using four cell lines -- two epithelial cells lines and two fibroblast cells lines. They found that the protein cannot be induced by stress in epithelial cells, in which 80 percent of cancers arise. It can, however, be induced in the fibroblasts that make up muscle tissue.

The significant finding in this investigation is that, in certain cell types, only one specific heat shock factor controls the expression of ?B-Crystallin. For example, in the epithelial cell lines, it is heat shock factor 4 (HSF4), while a different heat shock factor, (HSF1), plays this role in the fibroblast cells lines.

In the past, the data has indicated that a heat shock factor could control the expression of ?B-Crystallin randomly and equally. However, Jing's discovery overrides this rule. His findings strongly suggest the "preference" of the ?B-Crystallin to heat shock factors in certain cells may be correlated with its versatility to various diseases.

"Considering the multiple roles of ?B-Crystallin in so many diseases, the access of the HSF1 and HSF4 to the ?B-Crystallin gene dictated by the certain cell type may be what is helping to cause certain diseases," Jing said. "If we can uncover the cascade of events that result in disease, we may be able to come up with strategies to block or interrupt that cascade."

Going forward, Jing and the research team will validate what they found in this study by examining single cells, which provides a greater challenge but may lead to further discoveries.

The study was funded by the National Institutes of Health.

    Microsoft Office 365 Home Premium

    • Pros

Designed from the ground up for cloud-based storage and collaboration. Clear, up-to-date interface. Subtle improvements throughout. Unmatched power for editing, viewing, sharing. Single license allows use on five machines, including Macs (which get Office 2011 for the Mac).

    • Cons Clumsy to use on a touch screen.
    • Bottom Line

A subscription to Microsoft Office 365 Home Premium lets you install a full copy of Office 2013 on up to five devices and also lets any Windows 7 or 8 machine temporarily download Word, Excel, or the other Office apps for use on other machines. Office 2013 looks better than Office 2010 and includes new convenience features, with a minimal learning curve for existing users.

    By Edward Mendelson

The title above says Microsoft Office 365 Home Premium, which is Microsoft's name for one of its many varieties of Office 2013?the subscription-based variety that you download from the cloud and use on your disk in exactly the same way you've used earlier versions of Office. The difference is that the new Office is designed to make it as easy to store documents in the cloud as it is on your disk, and Microsoft is pushing the idea that with Office 365, you can now edit Office documents anywhere?on any Windows-based desktop or tablet, on a Windows phone, in a Web browser, and even on your Mac, because your Office 365 subscription lets you have Office installed on five devices at any one time. This means you get Office 2013 on your Windows machines and Office 2011 for the Mac on your OS X machines. Office 2013 is an impressive upgrade to the world's most powerful office application suite, with new features so smoothly built in that it requires almost no new learning or training. Office 365 is the best argument I've seen for moving documents into the cloud without any compromise in features and flexibility compared to desktop-only applications.

    Versions
Starting today, home users can buy Office 365 Home Premium for a $99.99 annual subscription, which installs Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, Publisher, OneNote, and Access on Windows 7 or 8 machines (but not on Vista or XP) and the full Office 2011 suite on Macs. College students, faculty, and staff can get a similar Office 365 University subscription for a single payment of $79.99 for a full four years, usable on two devices?twenty bucks per year, cheaper than any other Office pricing I can remember. Both services come with 27 GB of cloud-based storage on Microsoft's SkyDrive service?20 GB added to the 7 GB that anyone can get for free. Office 365 versions for business are due on February 27.

    Office Forever
Starting today, you can also buy what Microsoft calls "perpetual" versions of Office 2013, meaning the traditional kind that are licensed forever but are only licensed to one machine. What you won't be able to do is buy Office 2013 on a DVD as you could with earlier versions. If you buy the "perpetual" Office 2013 in a box, what you get is a 25-character code that you can use after downloading the installer; if you want a DVD, you'll have to buy one in one of the "developing countries" where Microsoft still sells them.

Traditional retail versions of Office 2013 comes in Microsoft's typically confusing array of versions: Home & Student, Home & Business, Professional, and, for volume-license customers only, Professional Plus. And don't forget Office 2013 Home & Student RT, a reduced version of Office that only ships preloaded on ARM-based Windows 8 RT tablets, and which we plan to review when the current "preview" version gets updated to the final version at some unspecified future date.

One minor detail that won't affect the way you work but very slightly reduces clutter on the desktop and start menu. The names of the Office apps used to be Microsoft Word, Microsoft Excel, etc. Now they're Word, Excel, etc.

    Office in the Cloud
Microsoft has dabbled in cloud-based application services before, using the same Office 365 service name, but with this new version, Microsoft has shifted Office's focus from the desktop to the cloud, more or less the same way Windows 8 shifts Microsoft's focus from the desktop to the tablet. If you want to save your documents to your desktop by default, instead of the cloud-based SkyDrive linked to your Microsoft account, you have to dig into the Options menu and check a box next to "Save to Computer by default." Office 365 works in different ways depending on the device you're using. When you run it on a desktop or an Intel-based tablet like Microsoft's Surface Pro (due to ship in February), a complete set of full-featured, no-compromise Office apps are installed on your disk, so that Word, Excel, Outlook, and the rest are all exactly the same as the versions you get from the traditional one-machine-only versions of Office 2013.

I asked Microsoft if we could expect versions of Office for Android or the iPad and iPhone. Microsoft's answer was that they were "not announcing" Office versions for non-Windows platforms at this time. It's pretty easy to guess that they might announce something in the future, but I can't guess when. Just as Windows 8 is Microsoft's answer to Apple in the tablet market, the latest Office 365 is Microsoft's answer to the cloud-based competition from Google Docs (which runs on every device you can think of) and Apple's Pages, Numbers, and Keynote apps, which run in different versions on OS X and iOS. Google Docs has big one advantage for home users?it's free. But business users and universities have to pay to get Google Docs, and Microsoft is offering a far more powerful product, with all the advanced features that Microsoft has been building into Office for the past twenty years.

PFT: Patriots could target Ed Reed

    tim-brownGetty Images

We agree wholeheartedly with the opinions expressed by Peter King in his latest Monday Morning Quarterback and elsewhere regarding the merit (or more accurately lack thereof) of former Raiders receiver Tim Brown?s non-allegation allegation that former Raiders coach Bill Callahan ?sabotaged? a 10-year-old Super Bowl.? But some questions remain as the latest Super Bowl week commences.

First, will 49ers coach Jim Harbaugh be asked about the situation at one of his many media availabilities this week?? Harbaugh, who was a first-year offensive assistant with the Raiders in 2002, wasn?t asked about it on Sunday night when the team arrived.? And given the extent to which the story has faded in recent days, he may not be asked about it at all.

Second, did the Raiders? game plan change two days before the game?? Brown?s ludicrous opinion of sabotage comes from his belief, as a factual matter, that Callahan changed the game plan.? So did he?? There has been no definitive answer provided to that question.

Third, did the Raiders fail to change audibles and line calls?? It has been presumed for nearly a decade that the Raiders didn?t account for the fact that former Oakland coach Jon Gruden knew the code words that would be used at the line of scrimmage on offense.? But Peter King?s dismantling of the sabotage theory in the latest Monday Morning Quarterback extends to the notion that the Bucs knew what the Raiders were planning to do.? The game broadcast, however, contained strong evidence to the contrary.

Tampa Bay safety John Lynch wore a microphone, and he plainly can be heard telling former Bucs defensive backs coach Mike Tomlin after the Raiders fell behind 20-3 late in the first half, ?Mike, every play they?ve run, we ran in practice.? It?s unreal.?

    Said Tomlin, ?I know.?

Whatever the reason, the Buccaneers? dominance was enough, we?re told, to prompt Raiders receiver Jerry Rice to rip the microphone he was wearing during the game from his pads and flush it down a toilet at halftime.

Fourth, given that King believes Brown?s assertion is ?utterly preposterous? and that King is one of the voters for induction into the Pro Football Hall of Fame, will this mess keep Brown out for another year?? The voters will swear that they don?t consider anything other than what happens on the field, in accordance with the Hall of Fame?s bylaws.? But as we explained in our one-time-and-one-time-only PFT season preview magazine (which apparently made a cameo appearance several months ago in an episode of Mike & Molly on CBS), the human beings who cast the votes are influenced by the things that tend to influence the decisions made by human beings.

If it?s a close call between Brown and someone else as a given voter makes the excruciating descent from 15 modern-era finalists to up to five modern-era enshrinees, Brown?s assertions could be viewed, consciously or otherwise, as reflecting the kind of disrespect for and misunderstanding of the game that could be the factor pushing that person one way or the other.

There would be no hard proof of it, and none of the voters will risk their vote by proclaiming publicly that they sabotaged Brown?s candidacy in part because of his claim of sabotage.? But it definitely could, in a close case, be a factor ? and we?d never know that it was.

Caterpillar profit weakened by high inventory, China fraud

(Reuters) - Caterpillar Inc , the world's largest maker of construction equipment, posted a 55 percent drop in quarterly profit on Monday due to a charge connected with accounting fraud at a Chinese subsidiary and weak demand among its dealers.

Caterpillar's bulldozers, tractors and other machines have been accumulating in warehouses due to slowing economies in China, Europe and the United States.

The company said it was able to sell off some of this glut in the fourth quarter, reducing the value of its inventory from the third quarter by $2 billion. Inventory levels, however, remain $1 billion above year-ago levels, and executives expect 2013 to be a "tough year."

Caterpillar said earlier this month it discovered accounting fraud at a Chinese coal mining supplier it bought in 2012. Caterpillar wrote down most of the $650 million deal, zapping fourth-quarter results by 87 cents per share.

"We're encouraged by recent improvements in economic indicators, but remain cautious," Caterpillar Chief Executive Doug Oberhelman said in a statement on Monday.

For the fourth quarter, the company posted net income of $697 million, or $1.04 per share, compared with $1.55 billion, or $2.32 per share, in the year-ago quarter.

Revenue fell 7 percent to $16.08 billion. Analysts expected revenue of $16.12 billion, according to Thomson Reuters I/B/E/S.

Caterpillar expects to earn $7 to $9 per share in 2013, below the $9.12 per share analysts expect.

    CHINA FRAUD

Caterpillar closed the purchase of ERA Mining Machinery Ltd and its subsidiary Siwei, China's fourth-largest maker of hydraulic coal mine roof supports, last June, paying $653.4 million (HK$5.06 billion).

After the deal closed, Caterpillar found that physical inventory did not match accounting statements, a discovery that led to the charge.

Caterpillar does not expect the fraud to harm its 2013 profit, but it will hinder the company's expansion into China, the world's largest coal producer.

Emory Williams, the chairman of ERA when the Caterpillar deal closed, ended days of silence on Monday, saying in a statement he was "dismayed" by the accounting charge Caterpillar was taking.

Williams said nothing about the accusation of accounting misconduct in his statement.

HILLARY CLINTON ABC News' Mary Bruce and Dana Hughes: " President Obama, Hillary Clinton: From Bitter Rivals to Bosom Buddies" In something of a parting gift, President Obama is making abundantly clear his deep support and fondness for outgoing Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, who is leaving wide open a possible presidential run in 2016. Sitting together for their first joint interview, you could almost forget that they once politically bludgeoned each other in the 2008 Democratic primary. "I'm going to miss her," Obama told. FOREIGN POLICY The Hills' Julian Pecquet: " Obama signals focus on foreign policy with new chief of staff" President Obama's choice of a foreign policy expert and longtime aide to become his chief of staff is widely seen as evidence that the president plans to emulate his predecessors, who used their second terms to put their mark on the world. By tapping Deputy National Security Adviser Denis McDonough for the role, Obama is also picking a former House and Senate staffer who's known for keeping out of the spotlight. LINK

IMMIGRATION The Los Angeles Times' Brian Bennett and Lisa Mascaro: " Senators agree on immigration overhaul plan" A bipartisan group of senators has agreed on a plan to grant legal status to most of the estimated 11 million illegal immigrants in the U.S., which could form the basis for a far-reaching overhaul of immigration laws this year. The Senate blueprint, drafted during weeks of closed-door meetings by leading senators from each party, will probably set parameters for a contentious legislative battle over the next several months. My WordPress Website ? Your Car Insurance Plan

Every year, more drivers travel the highways. As this number goes up, the chances of a car collision will also increase. If you get in a car wreck, the auto insurance you have can make a large difference in what happens next. So how can you figure out which type of insurance you need and how much you should buy? Insurance requirements vary by state/province, but usually include the following: Liability: It pays for the expenses you have caused to others in a car collision, including property damage and injury. Damages from bodily injury include medical expenses, lost wages, and pain and suffering. Property damage includes car repair costs and loss of use of property. If you are sued, this type of insurance can pay for your court costs. Recommended, higher levels of liability insurance are available that cover more than the lower, state-mandated insurance. Personal Injury Protection: Personal injury insurance is mandated in some states and is optional in others. It pays you or your passengers for medical treatment resulting from a crash, regardless of who may have been at fault, and is often called no-fault coverage. Local government usually sets minimum amounts. Medical Payments: This coverage is available in states that are not considered no-fault; it pays despite who carries responsibility for an accident. If this type of coverage is purchased, the insured person will receive coverage for necessary medical and funeral costs. Collision: This pays for damages to your car caused by a collision. Comprehensive: Protect your car from all non-collision damages when you buy this type of coverage. This may include protection from robbery, vandalism, and weather damage. Uninsured Motorist: This pays for repair and replacement costs when someone with insurance is injured in a crash caused by another person who does not have insurance. Under-Insured Motorist: This pays for damages when an insured person is injured in a crash caused by another person who does not have enough liability insurance to cover the total cost of the damages. Emergency road service, car rental, and other varieties of coverage can also be purchased. Your car insurance payments varies based on the company and will depend on multiple factors, such as: * What coverage you choose * The type of the car you drive * Whether or not you have been in an accident * Your age, sex and marital status * Where you live Don?t wait around to buy auto insurance; you should never be on the road without it. Review your needs, research your options, and with the help of your insurance agency, choose the option that fits you best. State Farm Insurance Silver Spring MD

Celts top Heat 100-98 in 2 OT; Rondo out for year

BOSTON (AP) ? Paul Pierce hit a go-ahead jumper with 31 seconds left and the Boston Celtics beat the Miami Heat 100-98 in double overtime Sunday then learned that All-Star point guard Rajon Rondo will miss the rest of the season with a knee injury.

Rondo will have surgery for a torn anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee. He was hurt late in Boston's 123-112 loss, also in two overtimes, to the Atlanta Hawks on Friday night.

The postgame mood in the locker room "was good" before he told his players the extent of the injury, coach Doc Rivers said, "and then it went down."

This game was the first in Boston for Ray Allen since he left the Celtics after five seasons and signed as a free agent with Miami. He scored 21 points.

Kevin Garnett had 24 points and 11 rebounds, and Pierce added 17 points, 13 rebounds and 10 assists for the Celtics, who ended a six-game losing streak, their longest in six seasons. LeBron James had 34 points for the Heat, whose winning streak stopped at four.

"As much as I've been a rival with Boston over the years, I never want to see anyone go down," James said. "It's terrible, not only for their team but for the league."

Pierce's basket gave the Celtics a 99-98 lead. James had a chance to put the Heat ahead but missed a 12-foot jumper with 6.8 seconds to go from the left with defender Jeff Green jumping out at him. Pierce got the rebound and was fouled.

He sank the first shot. Then, as a fan shouted, "This one's for Rondo," he missed the second.

Miami had one last chance, but Shane Battier missed a long jumper at the buzzer.

The Heat also could have won in the first overtime, but Dwyane Wade, who had 17 points, missed a long jumper as the buzzer sounded. They had led 93-89 after consecutive baskets by James, but Garnett hit a layup with 1:45 remaining and a shot from the right baseline with 1:14 to go.

Boston could have avoided the first overtime when Pierce inbounded from behind his backboard with two seconds left to Jason Terry. But Terry's shot from the top of the key was short. The Heat had tied it on a 3-pointer by James with seven seconds remaining in regulation after Allen missed a 3-pointer from the left corner with 15 seconds to go.

Rondo arrived at TD Garden on Sunday for a pregame shootaround but was taken to a hospital after complaining of knee pain. Courtney Lee started in Rondo's place.

The initial report was a hyperextended knee, but the team announced during the game that tests showed the ACL tear. His teammates didn't find out until after the final buzzer.

Allen was part of the Big Three with Pierce and Garnett starting in 2007-08. In their first season together, Boston won its 17th NBA championship. He played against the Celtics once before this season, a 120-107 Heat win in Miami in the opener.

The crowd gave Allen a standing ovation when highlights of his career with the Celtics were shown on the video board above center court during a timeout with 5:33 left in the first quarter. At the Miami bench, he raised his left hand in recognition.

Allen entered the game about a minute later and was booed when he touched the ball. The boos came down again when he took two free throws ? missing the first, making the second ? three minutes into the second quarter.

Allen went back into the game with 30 seconds left in the first half with the score tied at 43 and made a layup with 16 seconds to go. But Pierce sank a driving layup with 4.3 seconds remaining to tie it 45-45 at halftime.

It was Miami's first game in Boston since it won Game 6 of the Eastern Conference finals behind James' 45 points.

Indonesia readies for $1 trillion trade talks

(AP) ? Indonesia may hold the key to a $1 trillion injection into the global economy.

That's how much the World Trade Organization believes is riding on talks later this year in Bali, when trade ministers hope to cut through some of the red tape that slows global commerce.

Indonesia's Foreign Minister Marty Natalegawa told The Associated Press that failure is not an option and that a strong effort is being put in to ensure that the WTO meeting in Bali is "crowned with success."

The current trade talks, known as the Doha Round, began in 2001, and after a decade of little progress for a range of reasons, many had pronounced the negotiations to reduce global trade barriers as dead.

There are hopes that the current fragile state of the world economy, including the debt crisis afflicting the 17 European Union countries that use the euro and unspectacular U.S. growth, may add impetus to the discussions.

"It's very critical now, especially with the difficulties in the global economy, especially in the eurozone," he said of efforts to reach a new global free trade pact. "Trade facilitation becomes a key driver for economic recovery, so this is now even ever more important to what it was before."

Trade ministers from 24 nations met Saturday on the sidelines of the World Economic Forum in Davos in an unofficial gathering hosted by the Swiss government.

Afterward, Swiss Economic Minister Johann Schneider-Ammann said the group agreed they could reach a tentative agreement on some of the key elements of a global trade deal this summer, in preparation for the ministerial talks in December at Bali.

Schneider-Ammann said he sensed some "optimism" that efforts to streamline customs procedures and other rules to reduce the costs of trade "will be successful."

The ministers agreed to resist protectionism, focus on elements such as trade facilitation and agriculture, and to "take stock" around Easter of the progress being made, Schneider-Ammann said.

"Serious attempts to deliver results in Bali have already started," he added.

The Doha negotiations have been billed as a way of boosting economic development among the poorest countries, by reducing barriers on their exports to wealthier markets.

The WTO's director general, Pascal Lamy, has been telling the Davos gathering of political, business and academic elites that an international trade deal would provide a $1 trillion boost to the global economy. He estimates world trade is worth about $22 trillion.

Flanked by Schneider-Ammann, Lamy told reporters that he believes it is technically "do-able" to craft draft agreements on some of the key elements of a deal by next summer.

U.S. Trade Representative Ron Kirk said he had to "temper" his enthusiasm for a deal since it has eluded the world for a decade.

Areas of dispute include tariffs on manufactured good, agricultural subsidies, market access and intellectual property rules. Brazil, China and India have resisted U.S. demands to lower taxes on imports of manufactured goods.

"But, at least of the 24 countries represented today, it felt like we had made more substantive progress," Kirk said in an AP interview. "The good news is we've spent a lot of work on a smaller, more realistic package centered around trade facilitation, which can be a huge benefit to developing economies. And it feels like that is starting to bear fruit."

Kirk, who leaves his job next month, said the ministers renewed their commitment "to double down, do what we need to do" to reach a deal in Bali. "I'm as hopeful as I've been in a long time."

Magnitsky's mother thanks Obama for legislation

(AP) ? The mother of a whistle-blowing Russian lawyer who died in prison is thanking President Barack Obama for a U.S. law targeting Russian officials deemed to be human rights violators involved in her son's death.

Sergei Magnitsky died in jail of untreated pancreatitis in 2009 after accusing Russian officials of stealing $230 from the state. The case has angered both Russian activists and the West, and in December, the U.S. Congress passed legislation in Magnitsky's name, calling for sanctions against officials deemed to be connected with human rights abuses.

Natalya Magnitskaya said Thursday she is grateful to Obama for facilitating the adoption of the bill saying that it "will somehow keep my son's memory."

She also criticized Moscow's decision to bar Americans from adopting Russian children in retaliation.

Soccer violence verdict sparks deadly riots in Egypt

PORT SAID, Egypt/CAIRO (Reuters) - At least 32 people were killed on Saturday when Egyptians rampaged in protest at the sentencing of 21 people to death over a soccer stadium disaster, violence that compounds a political crisis facing Islamist President Mohamed Mursi.

Armored vehicles and military police fanned through the streets of Port Said, where gunshots rang out and protesters burned tires in anger that people from their city had been blamed for the deaths of 74 people at a match last year.

The rioting in Port Said, one of the most deadly spasms of violence since Hosni Mubarak's ouster two years ago, followed a day of anti-Mursi demonstrations on Friday, when nine people were killed. The toll over the past two days stands at 41.

The flare-ups make it even tougher for Mursi, who drew fire last year for expanding his powers and pushing through an Islamist-tinged constitution, to fix the creaking economy and cool tempers enough to ensure a smooth parliamentary election.

That vote is expected in the next few months and is meant to cement a democratic transition that has been blighted from the outset by political rows and street clashes.

The National Defense Council, which is led by Mursi and includes the defense minister who commands the army, called for "a broad national dialogue that would be attended by independent national characters" to discuss political differences and ensure a "fair and transparent" parliamentary poll.

The National Salvation Front of liberal-minded groups and other Mursi opponents cautiously welcomed the call.

    THREATS OF VIOLENCE

Clashes in Port Said erupted after a judge sentenced 21 men to die for involvement in the deaths at the soccer match on February 1, 2012. Many were fans of the visiting team, Cairo's Al Ahly.

Al Ahly fans had threatened violence if the court had not meted out the death penalty. They cheered outside their Cairo club when the verdict was announced. But in Port Said, residents were furious that people from their city were held responsible.

Protesters ran wildly through the streets of the Mediterranean port, lighting tires in the street and storming two police stations, witnesses said. Gunshots were reported near the prison where most of the defendants were being held.

A security source in Port Said said 32 people were killed there, many dying from gunshot wounds. He said 312 were wounded and the ministry of defense had allocated a military plane to transfer the injured to military hospitals.

Inside the court in Cairo, families of victims danced, applauded and some broke down in tears of joy when they heard Judge Sobhy Abdel Maguid declare that the 21 men would be "referred to the Mufti", a phrase used to denote execution, as all death sentences must be reviewed by Egypt's top religious authority.

There were 73 defendants on trial. Those not sentenced on Saturday would face a verdict on March 9, the judge said.

At the Port Said soccer stadium a year ago, many spectators were crushed and witnesses saw some thrown off balconies after the match between Al Ahly and local team al-Masri. Al Ahly fans accused the police of being complicit in the deaths.

Among those killed on Saturday were a former player for al-Masri and a soccer player in another Port Said team, the website of the state broadcaster reported.

    TEARGAS FIRED

On Friday, protesters angry at Mursi's rule had taken to the streets for the second anniversary of the uprising that erupted on January 25, 2011 and brought Mubarak down 18 days later.

Police fired teargas and protesters hurled stones and petrol bombs. Nine people were killed, mainly in the port city of Suez, and hundreds more were injured across the nation.

Reflecting international concern at the two days of clashes, British Foreign Office Minister for the Middle East Alistair Burt said: "This cannot help the process of dialogue which we encourage as vital for Egypt today, and we must condemn the violence in the strongest terms."

European Union foreign policy chief Catherine Ashton urged the Egyptian authorities to restore calm and order and called on all sides to show restraint, her spokesperson said.

On Saturday, some protesters again clashed and scuffled with police in Cairo, Alexandria and other cities. In the capital, youths pelted police lines with rocks near Tahrir Square.

In Suez, police fired teargas when protesters angry at Friday's deaths hurled petrol bombs and stormed a police post and other governmental buildings including the agriculture and social solidarity units.

Around 18 prisoners in Suez police stations managed to escape during the violence, a security source there said, and some 30 police weapons were stolen.

"We want to change the president and the government. We are tired of this regime. Nothing has changed," said Mahmoud Suleiman, 22, in Cairo's Tahrir Square, the cauldron of the 2011 anti-Mubarak revolt.

Mursi's opponents say he has failed to deliver on economic pledges or to be a president representing the full political and communal diversity of Egyptians, as he promised.

"Egypt will not regain its balance except by a political solution that is transparent and credible, by a government of national salvation to restore order and heal the economy and with a constitution for all Egyptians," prominent opposition politician Mohamed ElBaradei wrote on Twitter.

The opposition National Salvation Front, responding to the Defense Council's call for dialogue, said there must be a clear agenda and guarantees that any deal would be implemented, spokesman Khaled Dawoud told Reuters.

The Front earlier on Saturday threatened an election boycott and to call for more protests on Friday if demands were not met. Its demands included picking a national unity government to restore order and holding an early presidential poll.

Mursi's supporters say the opposition does not respect the democracy that has given Egypt its first freely elected leader.

The Muslim Brotherhood, which propelled Mursi to office, said in a statement that "corrupt people" and media who were biased against the president had stirred up fury on the streets.

The frequent violence and political schism between Islamists and secular Egyptians have hurt Mursi's efforts to revive an economy in crisis as investors and tourists have stayed away, taking a heavy toll on Egypt's currency.

DNP Safaricom announces the Yolo, Africa's first Intelpowered smartphone

Intel is finally opening its wings and spreading its mobile influence to Africa, as Kenya's Safaricom has officially introduced the Yolo phone. The device, which will be the very first Intel-powered smartphone on the continent, will be priced at Kshs 10,999 ($126) and bundled with 500MB of data. The handset supports HSPA+ network connectivity and packs a Z2420 Atom processor that reaches speeds of up to 1.2GHz. If that CPU sounds familiar, it should, because it's the same "Lexington" chip that we sampled a few weeks back at CES. As for the rest of the Yolo's specs, you'll be looking at Android 4.0 on a 3.5-inch display and snapping pictures with a 5-megapixel shooter capable of recording 1080p HD video. Not looking to compete with top-shelf handsets, Safaricom hopes to catch the eye of frugal first-time buyers with this budget-friendly device. If you fit the bill, you may want to check out the Yolo as soon as possible -- after all, your phone only lives once.

Low vitamin D levels linked to high risk of premenopausal breast cancer

Jan. 24, 2013 ? A prospective study led by researchers from the University of California, San Diego School of Medicine has found that low serum vitamin D levels in the months preceding diagnosis may predict a high risk of premenopausal breast cancer.

The study of blood levels of 1,200 healthy women found that women whose serum vitamin D level was low during the three-month period just before diagnosis had approximately three times the risk of breast cancer as women in the highest vitamin D group. The study is currently published online in advance of the print edition of the journal Cancer Causes and Control.

Several previous studies have shown that low serum levels of vitamin D are associated with a higher risk of premenopausal breast cancer. "While the mechanisms by which vitamin D could prevent breast cancer are not fully understood, this study suggests that the association with low vitamin D in the blood is strongest late in the development of the cancer, "said principal investigator Cedric Garland, DrPH, FACE, professor in the Department of Family and Preventive Medicine at UC San Diego.

Analyses of vitamin D levels measured more than 90 days before diagnosis have not conclusively established a relationship between serum levels and risk of premenopausal breast cancer in the present cohort. However, this new study points to the possibility of a relevant window of time for cancer prevention in the last three months preceding tumor diagnosis -a time physiologically critical to the growth of the tumor.

According to Garland, this is likely to be the point at which the tumor may be most actively recruiting blood vessels required for tumor growth. "Based on these data, further investigation of the role of vitamin D in reducing incidence of premenopausal breast cancer, particularly during the late phases of its development, is warranted," he said.

The new study drew upon 9 million blood serum specimens frozen by the Department of Defense Serum Repository for routine disease surveillance. The researchers thawed and analyzed pre-diagnostic samples of serum from 1,200 women whose blood was drawn in the same time frame -- samples from 600 women who later developed breast cancer, and from 600 women who remained healthy.

A 2011 meta-analysis by Garland and colleagues estimated that a serum level of 50 ng/ml is associated with 50 percent lower risk of breast cancer. While there are some variations in absorption, those who consume 4000 IU per day of vitamin D from food or a supplement normally would reach a serum level of 50 ng/ml.

Garland added that a consensus of all available data has shown no known risk associated with this concentration of vitamin D, which is measured as serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D. But he urges patients to ask their health care provider to measure their serum 25(OH)D before substantially increasing vitamin D intake.

"Reliance should not be placed on different forms of vitamin D, such as vitamin D2, and megadoses should be avoided except those ordered by a doctor for short-term use," Garland added.

Apple succumbs to the $500 billion market cap curse

Expectations often trump reality in the stock market.

In its latest quarterly earnings release, Apple (AAPL) reported a record 47.8 million iPhone sales, $54.5 billion in revenues and projected revenues of $41 billion to $43 billion for the current quarter. But analysts had anticipated 50 million iPhone sales, $54.6 million in Q1 revenues and guidance as high as $45.6 billion for the current quarter.

Apple shares plunged after the earnings announcement and shares were down another 11% by mid-morning Thursday.

Jeff Macke, co-host of Breakout on Yahoo! Finance, says Apple shares have peaked.

?Now it?s just a matter of whether or not [Apple] becomes one of the previous list of companies that obliterated shareholders since they hit over $500 billion,? he says. This list includes Cisco (CSCO), Intel (INTC), Microsoft (MSFT) and General Electric (GE). ?So far Apple has given back over a quarter billion dollars of market cap,? Macke adds.

?When you get that successful?picture Wal-Mart (WMT), Microsoft -- there?s nowhere to go. You run out of ideas,? says Macke.

He recommends three ways Apple can reinvent itself:

    • Fire CEO Tim Cook. ?The biggest questions [about Cook] were whether or not he could be an innovator, whether he could replace Mr. Jobs, who was an icon, a legend...that question has been answered," says Macke. He?s innovated nothing and failed at his core competency in operations, Macke argues.
    • Hire someone to run the retail stores?a position now unfilled. ?They need to get a new guy in there?ideally Ron Johnson?.bring the guy back," says Macke. Johnson held the job previously and excelled at it, then left to run beleaguered retailer J.C. Penney.
    • ?Do something? with the $140 billion in cash on hand. ?Put the money to work," Macke notes.

Pet-Crazy Vermont Is Going To The Cats | The Vermont Standard

By Virginia Dean,?Special To The Standard

Gato (Sp.), katze (Ger.), chat (Fr.), miu (Egyptian), chatool (Heb.), puccha (Sanskrit), kots (Russian), cath (Welsh) ? no matter what they?re called in what part of the world, cats have had a long, symbiotic relationship with humans ? 8,000 years, in fact, according to some historians.

Today, in the 21st century, Vermont leads this country in cat ownership with almost 50 percent of households owning at least one, according to recent research by the American Veterinary Medical Association.

?I?m not surprised at all,? said Dr. Lynn Martin, veterinarian at the Country Animal Hospital in Bethel. ?When I?m at veterinary conferences, cats are taking over dogs as being the most numerous pets because people are more mobile, live in apartments and find that cats are easier to take care of.? You can travel with them or leave them behind with someone like a neighbor coming in to take care of them.?

The 2012 statistics are based on the U.S. Pet Ownership and Demographics Sourcebook which recently revealed that Vermont also ranks first for pet ownership with 71 percent of households owning a pet.? Seven years ago, the last time the AVMA published the Sourcebook, Vermont also ranked first with 75 percent of households owning a pet. (Click here to see photos of local cats.)

?America has discovered the cat,? said Martin who has two marmalade cats of her own.? ?They?re captivating Americans. Everybody at our vet conferences is remarking on this phenomenon.?

At Gillingham?s, for example, local patrons should not surprised to see a tiger feline sitting on the counter or wandering through the aisles as they are making their selections or checking out.

?We have two female tigers that were rescued from Hurricane Katrina,? said Cindy Sands, mail order manager and store buyer. ?They were feral, brought to Vermont and fostered, and then we adopted them. They were small kittens when they came to us.?

?Ava is our brown tiger and entertains people,? Sands said.

Prior to the store?s current cats were siblings Henry and Frannie, Sands said. Henry was 16 when he died in October 1997.? Frannie died in 2001. Their ashes are in a box and are still contained in the store, Sands said.

?The cats are here because we wanted to replace Henry and Frannie,? Sands said.? ?We had so many people coming in looking for them that we decided to get more.?

The current rate of cat adoption at the Lucy MacKenzie Human Society in Windsor leads Animal Care Technician Danielle Buffa to be unruffled with the recent statistics reflecting feline popularity in this state.

?It doesn?t surprise me,? said Buffa.? ?We?ve had a lot of adoptions here lately, especially older cats.? Dogs are high maintenance and have a lot of energy whereas cats are quieter and more mellow.? Their personalities are already set which is great particularly for elderly individuals.? The current trend is awesome.? I?m so happy to see them going to good homes.?

At the Upper Valley Humane Society in Enfield, N.H., Executive Director Deborah Turcott related that, with what she calls ?the conscientious nature of Vermont residents.?

?Compared to dogs, cats are more independent both from a care and personality perspective,? Turcott said.

Turcott said that, similar to Lucy MacKenzie, the UVHS has scheduled more adoptions within the last couple of years.

?We see more and more people who, because of lifestyle and circumstances, will look for a cat,? Turcott said. ?In fact, overall, we have seen an increase in 2011 from 397 to in 2012, 581 adoptions, with cats representing 65-75 percent in a given month.?

Aside from the ease with which cats can be cared for and their adaptability to small or even commercial living spaces, local Vermonters simply enjoy their independence and mystique.

?They?re personable yet aloof at the same time,? said Barnard resident Jean Robert Ashley who owns two Maine coon cats. ?They talk to you, they have quick responses.? Having them is easy and convenient, and they require low maintenance.? They?re so loveable and precious.?

Meg Carlton, owner of Tiger Tail Lodge LLC in Enfield, N.H., agreed.

?They have their own sense of self,? said Carlton who has a clientele of more than 200 individuals who use her facility for boarding.?? ?Dogs often are in constant need of attention and when people are gone all day, they feel guilty.? You don?t experience that with cats.? They can take care of themselves.?

Perhaps the quintessential example of this self-sufficiency is reflected in the barn cat, a hearty breed that by its very nature feeds off the structure?s inherent vermin and remains liberated from the conventional domestic and often indoor member of its own species.

?We have four of them,? said stable hand and veterinary technician Anne Marie at the Kedron Valley Stables in South Woodstock. ?We have a huge hayloft that they climb up and down and sleep in.? They definitely keep the rodent population down, maybe not 100 percent, but we don?t see the numbers of mice and rats that we would if they weren?t there.?

Cody Palmer of the Doton Farm in Barnard said their barn cats follow a daily routine as a result of her introducing her two female domestic short hairs to the barn when they were only a few weeks old.

?They?re good mousers and ratters,? Palmer said.? ?As soon as they hear the milk machines go off and we stop milking, they?ll come running.?

Palmer, similar to many others, grew up with cats and so has another young feline in her own house who tends to be on the impish and comical side.

?She?s strictly a house cat,? Palmer said.? ?She snuggles with me in my bed, waits at the door and is there when I get home from work.? She follows me around and even plays with our dog.? At times, she even acts like a dog.? She?ll get up on the table ? even though she?s not supposed to ? and will even go into the shower to explore after I get out.?

Barnard Town Constable Wes Hennig also comes from a long heritage of living with the furry felines.

?I?ve always had a cat since I was a little kid,? said Hennig who has a shy, long-haired stub tail female cat.? ?They?re great creatures.? They?re smart and a lot of fun to watch.? Sometimes they do some crazy stuff.? You don?t have to take care of them as you would a dog but you do worry about them as much.?

Brenda Garsh, also of Barnard, concurred.

?If we go somewhere, we just need someone to come in,? said Garsh who owns a 9-year-old cat that one day suddenly appeared around her house and eventually was taken in by Garsh and her family.? ?They?re extremely independent.?

Aside from being easy to look after, transport and contain, cats are also inexpensive to feed, according to Cathy Peters, veterinarian technician and co-owner of Runamuck LLC in Woodstock who owns four Siamese, the youngest being a year-and-a-half and the oldest, 12 years.

?I love them because they?re like dogs,? Peters laughed.? ?They talk a lot and at times can be kind of naughty.? They stay like kittens longer, too.? When I?m downstairs cooking or doing chores, I can hear them zooming back and forth upstairs having fun.?

Another reason cats might be so popular, Peters added, is because of their longevity.

?Indoor cats usually live a nice long life which I speculate is another reason why people love having them,? said Peters.? ?They?re friendly and don?t require a lot of maintenance.?

Part of the reason for their long life, aside from living indoors instead of outside, Martin explained, is due to their upsurge in popularity over the last couple of decades.

?As cats have risen in status, so have the research dollars,? Martin said.? ?There is more money available for vaccinations, medical issues, and treating diseases as well as basic nutrition.? The whole industry that supports pet products is seeing that there is money to be made which, in turn, only benefits the cat.?
