The top of the UCF lineup produced with great efficiency tonight as the Knights (1-0) beat the Siena Saints (0-1) 7-1 at Jay Bergman Field.
Chris Taladay?picked up right where he left off last season. Taladay, the team hits leader from a year ago, drove in the first two runs of the game on a single in the first inning. The senior went 4-5 in the game with four singles and three RBIs.
?Chris Taladay just hits and hits and hits,??UCF head coach Terry Rooney said. ?There?s nothing new there. He certainly had a great opening night.?
Taladay, the cleanup hitter, was consistently set up with runners on base. The 1-3 hitters (JoMarcos Woods, Ryan Breen and Erik Hempe) went 8-14 with two RBIs, and accounted for all seven runs scored by UCF in the game.
Starting pitcher Ben Lively was very effective in his first start of the season. The junior threw six strong innings, allowing no earned runs on five hits while striking out five Saints.
Lively was on a strict 90-pitch-maximum outing. He reached that limit with three innings remaining for the bullpen.
?I thought Ben Lively settled down and pitched well,? Rooney said. ?He was very poised, very calm, working pitch to pitch and Ben did a very good job.?
Relief pitcher Harrison?Hukari locked down the seventh and eighth innings, allowing only two hits. Freshman Zac Favre made his collegiate debut in the ninth inning, retiring three of the four batters he faced.
These two teams will face off once again tomorrow evening, with the first pitch scheduled for 4 p.m.
Sophmore Erik Skoglund will get the start for UCF. The southpaw went 5-3 with a 3.21 ERA a season ago. Starting for Siena will be Matt Gage. In 15 appearances last year, the sophomore went 1-3 with a 3.95 ERA.?
